Gerald "Gerry" Greger Obituary

Gerald (Gerry) Greger, beloved husband of Mary Kay (Fleming) Greger and oldest son of the late Adolph G. Greger and Agnes (Gavin) Greger, passed away at Bristol Hospital on January 1, 2014 after a tenacious battle with cancer. Born in Bristol on May 17, 1937, Gerry attended John J. Jennings School and Bristol High School, class of 1955. He continued his education at the University of Connecticut, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business in 1959. While at UCONN, Gerry participated in the ROTC Program and entered the United States Army in 1960 with a rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He served actively and in the Army Reserves for 28 years, retiring as a Full Colonel in 1988. An avid sportsman, Gerry played football, basketball, and baseball at Jennings and Bristol High as well as soccer at UCONN. He played for Bristol American Legion Baseball and while in the Army, played both football and baseball. In 1961, Gerry was the starting catcher for the U.S Army's European World Championship Team. On November 22, 2013, Gerry was inducted into the Bristol Sports Hall of Fame surrounded by his family and friends, one of the proudest moments of his life. Gerry was Co-owner and President of Greger/Campbell Insurance in Bristol and served as President of the Independent Insurance Agents of CT. Gerry also served as a Commissioner of the Bristol Board of Education. Upon retirement from the insurance industry, Gerry began a cherished "career" at Bristol Central High School as the Head Coach of the Rams Golf Team and a much loved member of the school's faculty. In addition to his wife, Gerry leaves four children, Michael Greger and his wife Barbara of Bristol, Jeffrey Greger, Susanna Compositor, and Peter Greger of Portsmouth, NH. He leaves Mary Kay's children Marc Murawski of Los Angeles, CA and Beth Hines and her husband Michael of Bristol. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Greger Vontell of Bristol and brother and very best friend, William Greger and his wife Frances of Bristol. Gerry leaves his treasured grandchildren, Kristen, Samantha, Jake and Cody Greger, Jessica and Jacqueline Compositor, and Jackson and Luke Hines. Gerry leaves six special nephews, Bill, Sean, and Dory Greger, and Gary, Kevin, and Gregg Vontell and their families. He also leaves behind many dear friends, who have been in his life since childhood. Gerry was loved by all who knew him, as he was a very special man and gentle soul. A Mass of Christian Burial for Gerry will be celebrated on Monday, January 6, 2014, 10 A.M. at St. Joseph Church, 33 Queen Street, Bristol followed by military honors. Family and friends are welcome to call at the Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol on Sunday, January 5th, from 4pm to 8pm.
