James G. Vicino Obituary

James G. "Big Jim" Vicino, 63, of Wethersfield and Charlestown, NH, beloved husband of Barbara (Surowiec) Vicino for thirty-four years, passed away peacefully, Thursday, August 21, 2014 with his wife, nephew and close friends by his side. He was born February 3, 1951, in Hartford and was the son of the late Anthony J. Vicino and Hazel (Gordon) Vicino. For the past twenty years, he was the sole owner of the family business started sixty years ago, A. J. Vicino & Sons, Incorporated on New Britain Avenue in Rocky Hill. Big Jim, as he was affectionately called, worked at the nursery most of his life. He was a member of the Wethersfield/Rocky Hill B.P.O.E. Lodge 2308 for the past forty-three years and was recognized by being awarded the "Italian Man of the Year" in 1985, the "Elks Distinguished Citizenship Award" in 2009, and the "Elk of the Year" for 1992-1993. In addition, Jim was also a member of Moose Lodge 679 Springfield, VT. Jim very generously contributed to many local charities, especially youth athletic leagues and organizations, and was a sponsor of the Rocky Hill Men's Softball League for thirty-six years. He was a longtime faithful communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Wethersfield. Big Jim will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Besides his wife, he is survived by his nephew, James R. Vicino of Rocky Hill, several cousins, and a host of very dear and close friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Robert Vicino. Calling hours will be Thursday (August 28th) from 3-7 p.m. at the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday (August 29th) at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 56 Hartford Avenue, Wethersfield. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church.
