John J. Duffy Jr. Obituary

John J. Duffy Jr. On December 1, 2013 John Duffy passed from this life after a long battle against cancer. John was born April 19, 1928 to John and Margaret Duffy in Malden, MA. John was predeceased in 2001 by his beloved wife Irene of 48 years. It is with great delight that John re-unites with her for eternal joy and peace. He missed her every day! John was a resident of Manchester, CT for nearly 60 years, most recently living at White Oaks Retirement Community. John was also predeceased by his siblings Barbara Duffy, Ruth Duffy, Marguerite Crawford, George Duffy and Richard Duffy and his oldest son Robert. John is survived by Robert's daughter Caitlin Duffy of Watertown, CT. John's two other sons and their families, John C. Duffy of Farmington and his wife Nancy, and grandson Derek, Philip J. Duffy of Wethersfield, his wife Maria, and grandson Stephen. John was a veteran of WWII, serving in Europe as a mechanic. After the war, John attended Boston College for his undergraduate degree and Tufts University for his graduate degree. In 1953 John took a job at Pratt & Whitney, and worked as an engineer for over 30 years in East Hartford. After that he worked as a contract engineer. Other than his family, his other great joy was spending summer months up at Hampton Beach, New Hampshire and sitting on the deck enjoying the sights and sounds of the people going by. No detail went unnoticed, and no poor parking job went by without an opinion being shared with anyone in his family who happened to be within hearing distance. He was always reading a book while up at the beach, and his quiet Irish wit was a pleasure to experience. John was a faithful communicant of St. Bridget Church, in Manchester, and was active in the church community in a number of different ways. He was an original supporter of both St. Bridget School, and East Catholic High School. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 from 7:45-9:15 am at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St. Manchester, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Bridget Church, 80 Main Street, Manchester.
