LYONS, John J., Sr.
Mr. John J. Lyons, Sr., 94, of Thomaston and Venice, FL, died peacefully Friday morning, (January 4), at his home in Thomaston, three days after the passing of his beloved wife Margaret "Peg" (Hennessey) Lyons. John and Peg would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on July 1. Mr. Lyons was born Feb. 19, 1918 in Thomaston, son of the late William H. and Mary (Carson) Lyons. He was a graduate of Crosby High School in Waterbury, the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and the McAllister School of Embalming in New York and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Reserve Course in New London. He served 52 months as a Lieutenant during World War II in the North Atlantic and the European Theater. He had served as Chairman and member of the Board of Directors of the Terryville Trust Co., a member of the board of the New Britain Bank and Trust Co., a member of the Connecticut Bank Federation in Hartford, and was a Corporator of the Thomaston Savings Bank. He was also a member of the Litchfield County University Club, was a trustee and communicant of St. Thomas Church in Thomaston and a communicant of the Epiphany Cathedral in Venice, FL, and was a former member of the Chippanee Golf Club in Bristol and the Mission Valley Country Club in Laurel, FL. Active in Thomaston, he had served as Project Coordinator for the Thomaston High School, was a member and Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus Atlantic Council #18, a charter member of the Thomaston Stag Club, a charter member of the Thomaston Rotary Club, and a member of the Board of Finance for 33 years. He had served as a representative of the Boston Pontiac Zone on the Eastern Regional Council and was a member of the Connecticut Automobile Dealers Association. He operated the Automobile dealership, School Bus company and Funeral Home in Thomaston for many years. He is survived by his children Paul Lyons of Surprise, AZ, Jay Lyons of Farmington, Mary Ellen Lyons of Brookfield, Martha Lyons-Holden of Ft. Myers, FL, Peter Lyons of Scottsdale, AZ and Molly Fisher of Dudley, MA; his sister, Rosemary Martin of Thomaston; eight grandchildren, Sharon Nasr, Clark and Karissa Holden, Lacey Lyons-Burgin, Justin and Gavin Lyons, Patrick and Katie Fisher; two great-grandchildren, Alison Nasr and Brennan Fisher and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to offer special thanks to Rakhat and Gulzat for the care they provided and to Laura and Tammy from the VNS for the care they provided to their father.
