BELLINO, Joseph Paul

Joseph Paul Bellino, 68, of Squadron Line Road, Simsbury, beloved husband of Karen (Glenzel) Bellino, died Saturday (May 12, 2012) in the comfort of his home. He was born March 19, 1944 in Boston, MA, son of the late Salvatore M. and Filomena (Beatrice) Bellino. Joseph grew up in the Boston area and was a graduate of Boston College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he received his Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Colonel Bellino was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving as a Captain in the US Air Force. Colonel Bellino continued as a reservist to eventually retire as a Colonel in 1997. Among his numerous awards, Colonel Bellino's major awards include Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit award, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, the National Defense Service medal with a bronze star. As a civilian, Joe Bellino had a thriving career with the General Electric Company working locally and as far away as Hong Kong. Joe worked in many different areas ranging from small appliance development to robotic production lines working for a total of 30 years with GE. Joe Bellino was a licensed multi-engine commercial pilot, an aircraft and engine licensed mechanic and a licensed Professional Engineer. He was also a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in his hometown of Simsbury for 20 years. Joe was a member of St. Mary's Church in Simsbury. He was a highly active member of the Simsbury Airport where he was the lead "Air Boss" for the Simsbury Fly-in for the last 15 years. Joe turned a small fly-in pancake breakfast into one of the largest air shows of its kind in the Northeast with 10,000 people attending. Joe was a dedicated man to his community and a member of the Quiet Birdman. He crewed for the renowned aerobatic pilot Julie Clark who flies a T-34 at International Air Shows. Most of all, Joe will be remembered for his passions in life, his family, his grandchildren and flying his Cessna 172. Joe is survived by his loving wife; his daughter, Lisa Elliott and her husband Graham; his son, Michael Bellino and wife Debbie; sister, Marian Saluto and husband George and grandchildren, Sophia, Nicholas, Jack and Lauren.
Friends may call at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, on Tuesday, May 15 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, May 16, 9:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 942 Hopmeadow St. in Simsbury. Burial with military honors will be at 2 p.m. in Swampscott Cemetery in Salem, MA.
