Leroy W. Spiller Obituary

Leroy W. Spiller, 81, of East Hartford, passed peacefully on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family after an 8 year battle with leukemia. He is survived by his loving wife of over 59 years, Margaret Gordon Spiller, and his four devoted children, son, Thomas Spiller and his wife Tanya of South Windsor, daughter, Lois Brookes of Berlin, daughter, Margaret Antil and her husband Jeff of Vernon, son, Robert Spiller and his husband Randy Parsley of Portland; nine grandchildren that were the light of his life, Stefanie Spiller-MacDonald, Julie Spiller, Kaleigh Spiller, Seth Brookes, Chad Brookes, Mckenzie Brookes, Zachary Antil, Blake Antil, Olivia Spiller; three great-grandchildren, Capers MacDonald, Camden Brookes and Adelyn Brookes. Roy was a life-long resident of East Hartford and an active member of The First Congregational Church. He retired from Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, East Hartford in 1993 after 33 years. He was an active member of the East Hartford Rotary Club for 30 years and was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow Award recipient. He received the East Hartford Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award. He was a member of Boy Scouts Troup 1of East Hartford for over 70 years and a 60 year member of the Orient Lodge AF&AM, East Hartford (now Columbia Lodge #25 AF & AM, South Glastonbury). A few of the many community services he was involved in were: Coordinator of the First Congregational Church Food Bank for over 16 years; President of the Raymond Library Association; Treasurer of the Historical Society of East Hartford; and raising over $1 million dollars as an auctioneer for various charities. He was also instrumental in bringing the Salvation Army Bell Ringers and the Holiday Toy Store to East Hartford. Funeral services will be Friday (September 5th) at 10 am at First Congregational Church, 837 Main Street, East Hartford. (Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church on Friday morning). Burial with military honors will follow at Hillside Cemetery, East Hartford. Relatives and friends may call at the D'ESOPO-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford on Thursday (September 4th) from 3-7 pm. Roy's family would like to thank Dr. Michael Reale and his staff at the DeQuattro Cancer Center in Manchester for the professional care and dedication they provided to Roy and his family.
