WHITMAN, Matthew Herrick

Matthew Herrick Whitman, 53, of Willistown, Pennsylvania, beloved husband of Mary H Whitman, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 18, while on a business trip in Belgium. Born in Newton, New Jersey, in 1958, son of the late Dana T. Whitman, Jr. and surviving mother, Helen Herrick Whitman, grew up in Rocky Hill, Connecticut and graduated valedictorian from Rocky Hill High School Class of 1976 and Summa Cum Laud from the University of Connecticut in 1981, and he achieved highest honors in his graduate program. Matt began his research career at Yale University and continued a distinguished career in pharmaceutical research at GlaxoSmithKline where he led numerous major global drug submissions to the Food and Drug Administration and other Health Authorities. Matt was the recipient of numerous Impact and Recognition Awards. Matt embraced numerous charities and made substantial contributions to them. Matt was an avid fan of the UCONN Huskies Basketball Teams. He was an accomplished Master's runner and frequently finished in the Elite category. Most of all, he enjoyed hiking, outdoor activities, and time with his family. He enjoyed traveling especially summer trips to Maine. He also loved spending vacations in Disney World with his family. He is survived by his wife, Mary of 25 years; son, Matthew Herrick Whitman, Jr.; mother, Helen Herrick Whitman; brothers Dana T. Whitman III and Nancy; Christian P. Whitman; and sister, Noel Whitman and Mary Jo Capitani. He also leaves his nephews, Dana T. Whitman, IV and Joshua T. Whitman and great nephew, Dana T. Whitman, V. He is also survived by numerous cousins, friends, and colleagues.
Friends will be received at Brooklawn Funeral Home at 511 Brook St. in Rocky Hill, between the hours of 7 and 9 on Monday, October 31. A memorial service will be held in the Philadelphia area at a later date. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to Cradles to Crayons (cradlestocrayons.org), a favorite charity for homeless and disadvantaged children, can be made in Matt's name.
