JOHNSON, N. Harold


N. Harold Johnson, passed away quietly on April 30, 2013 with his family at his side. He was 88 years old. Harold and Ruth would have celebrated their 68 wedding anniversary on May 13. Harold will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, a leader in his community, and a caring friend. Harold was born in Brooklyn, NY, the beloved only child of Karl and Victoria (Lundgren) Johnson. He grew up in Staten Island, NY and graduated from Tottenville High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the South Pacific aboard the heavy cruiser USS Canberra. He attended Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1949. He accepted a position at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in 1952 and worked in supervisory positions in Development Operations of the Manufacturing Dept., designing enhanced aircraft engine components. He retired in 1987 after a 35yr career. Harold was a Mason (Wyllys-St John's Lodge) and a member of The Squires, Half Century Club, the Scandinavian Cultural Society, and the Swedish Relief Society. He played baseball in his youth, enjoyed dancing, and became an avid golfer at Rockledge Golf Course later in life, scoring two holes-in-one in retirement. Harold and Ruth were 'snowbirds' for 25 years. They stayed in Ormond Beach, FL where they enjoyed being members of the Ormond Beach Shuffleboard Club. Some of Harold's finest moments were spent helping his daughters with math, introducing them to tennis and golf, and years later, playing with his younger granddaughter Karen. He is survived by his wife Ruth, daughters Jan Norris and Carol Phillips, sons-in-law Karl Norris and Mark Phillips, granddaughters Karen Norris, Priscilla Ramage and husband John Ramage, and one great granddaughter, Katie Ramage. He is also survived by cousin Elizabeth Kokeas and family in Brooklyn, NY, cousin Lennart Lundgren and family in Sweden, sister-in-law Helen Hawley and family in Seal Beach, CA, niece Sandra (Olsen) Bousquet and her husband Bruce Bousquet, and lifetime friend, Doris Colgan and family on Cape Cod, MA. The family is grateful to all the wonderful doctors who treated Harold through his many health issues and to the hospice staff who cared for him at home.
Calling hours will be held at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main St., West Hartford on Friday, May 3 from 4-8 p.m. A private burial service will occur at a later date.
