Richard J. Brigham Obituary

Richard J. Brigham, 85, of Windsor, formerly of Weatogue, beloved husband of Joan (Bogert) Brigham, passed on peacefully on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Dick was known for his commitment to education, dedication to volunteering and his great sense of humor. He was born March 8, 1929, in Orange, NJ, to the late George Brigham, Sr. and Josephine (LaVenture) Brigham, and was raised in Springfield, MA, where he went on to earn his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Springfield College. Dick served his country honorably in the United States Army. A lifelong educator, Dick was an elementary school teacher for the West Hartford Public Schools for 34 years before his retirement, and he continued to tutor and mentor children up until his death. He was a founding member and first President of the Simsbury ABC (A Better Chance), which helps provide inner city youth a chance at a better education. Dick was also very active in community theater, acting in plays with the Theatre Guild of Simsbury, Mark Twain Masquers and the Park Road Playhouse, among others. He also remained active with the Springfield College Alumni Association. In addition to his wife Joan, he is survived by his children, Beth Brigham of West Hartford; Steve Brigham and his wife Tonya of Bowie, MD; Dave Brigham and his wife Beth Morahan of Newton, MA; his grandchildren, Owen, Amelia, Grace and Isaiah, as well as six nieces, three nephews and several grand nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, George Brigham, Jr., and William Brigham. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 3, at 2:30 p.m., at The Universalist Church of West Hartford, 433 Fern St., West Hartford. Dick's family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and staff of the St. Francis Hospital ICU, and his primary care physician, Dr. Kathleen Mueller, for their warm and compassionate care.
