Robert S. HOUSE Jr. Obituary

HOUSE JR., Robert S.

Robert S. House Jr., 58, of Avon, passed away peacefully at his riverfront home while surrounded by family. Born in Hartford on the 10th of May, 1954 to the late Robert Schunack House Sr. and Ella Deming House, Robert graduated with distinction from Yale University in 1976 with a BA in Economics. He started his career on Wall Street and in the World Trade Center as a futures market analyst at ContiCommodity Services and Merrill Lynch. His insightful market opinions on precious metals were frequently quoted in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. Robert completed his MBA from New York University in 1980 before marrying his loving wife Ilona (Missy) in 1981 and moving back to Connecticut to start a family. He completed his career working for over 21 years at Cigna in Bloomfield, retiring in January 2012 as the Managing Director of Performance & Risk, responsible for the performance of internal investment portfolios and outside investor due diligence. In his free time, Robert enjoyed competing on the squash and tennis courts, winning several amateur tournaments in tennis. Later in his athletic career he directed his proficiency for racquet sports to ping pong, with frustrated adversaries convinced he was "nationally ranked." An avid outdoorsman and lover of nature, he enjoyed sailing HobieCat catamarans and bodysurfing on the RI shoreline, trail riding motorcycles, and kayaking the Farmington River. He was also a long standing conservationist, focusing on the preservation of both fresh and salt water habitats. Known as the consummate tinkerer, any mechanical device was susceptible to modification for the improvement of functionality and performance. He also greatly enjoyed the friendly competition and good company of his poker leagues. Robert is survived by his wife of 31 years, Ilona; son Randall of Houston, TX; daughter Lauren of Cambridge, MA; sisters Betsy House of Stonington, Marcia and husband Roger Sutro of Richmond, RI; mother and father-in-law Helen and Steve Lukovics of Danbury; and brother-in-law Steve and wife Susan of Blackstone, MA.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Asylum Hill Congregation Church at 814 Asylum Ave in Hartford, on November 3 at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Farmington River Watershed Associations, 749 Hopmeadow St, Simsbury, CT, 06070 (860) 658-4442.
