Vincenzo "Jim" Ravita Obituary

Vincenzo "Jim" Ravita, 87, of Bristol, husband of 62 years to Jessie A. (Checovetes) Ravita, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Bristol Hospital. Jim was born in Bristol on March 5, 1926 and was a son of the late Domenic and Theresa (DeCarolis) Ravita. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law: James and Holly Ravita ; two daughters : Karen Brzezinski and husband Michael, Tina Wetmore and husband Steve. He was predeceased by a daughter: Diane Ravita. He had nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He attended local schools in Bristol and was a graduate of the Culinary Institute in New Haven. He worked in several factories in Bristol including New Departure Coaster Brake, Jimmies Restaurant on Savin Rock, West Haven, CT. Jim was drafted in the US Army, May 1944. After Basic Training and Advanced Infantry Training he was assigned to the 70th Inf Div and participated in three major battles; Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was awarded the Combat Inf Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, French Liberation Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. In September of 1950, he was recalled to Active Duty and served two more years in Europe as an Inf Platoon Sergeant. He re-enlisted in the CT ANG and took a full time ARNG Technician. He was assigned as the Unit 1st SGT and remained in the position for 25 years until he was reassigned to the 43rd HQ as Asst Ops SGT then reassigned to State HQ as Senior Personnel SGT. He completed his service as a SGT Major and retired in Mar of 86' with over forty years of service. He was a member of the 70th Inf Association, American Legion, Post 2, VFW Post 574, 43rd Div Assoc. and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He loved his family, country and the Army National Guard very much. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 24, 2014, 10 AM at the Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will be at the convenience of the family in St. Joseph Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, between 2 and 4 PM.
