BURGESS, Wendell R.

Dr. Wendell Richard Burgess, 95, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2013 in Lady Lake, FL. Wendell was born on Feb. 22, 1917 in Burlington, VT, the only child of the late John Richard Burgess and Stella (Hine) Burgess. Wendell is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jean (Solovey) Burgess, and by his second wife, Dorothy (Poirot) Burgess. As a boy, Wendell and his family moved to Hartford, CT where he attended Weaver High School. He proudly served in the South Pacific with the US Marine Corps during World War II. After the war, he graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and opened a practice in Windsor, CT. Wendell and his family lived in Windsor for over 40 years where he was very active in civic organizations. Upon his retirement, Wendell and Jean moved to Brooklyn, CT and operated Tannerbrook, a successful bed and breakfast. After Jean's death in 2001, he relocated to Lady Lake, FL. In his spare time, he loved nothing better than tinkering in his workshop, busy with a home improvement project or working on his beloved tractor. He also enjoyed traveling, and journeyed to Europe many times. Wendell is survived by his wife, Barbara Knoeppel of Lady Lake, his daughter Nancy (Burgess) Erickson, son-in-law Frederic Erickson, and grandchildren Schuyler and Kipp Erickson of Newburyport, MA, two nieces and one nephew; several cousins and many, many friends.
A memorial service in Newburyport is planned for late spring.
