McKENNA, William J.
William J. McKenna, of Old Saybrook, CT and Hillsboro Beach, FL, passed away October 29, 2013. He was 92. Born on September 23, 1921 to Vincent A. J. McKenna and Mauguerite Crowe McKenna, he was raised in Cumberland, RI, graduated from St. Raphael's Academy in 1938, and earned his bachelor's degree from Rhode Island College of Education in 1942. It was there that he met his wife of 68 years, Ann Emond McKenna. They were married on November 3, 1945. At the start of World War II, Mr. McKenna enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces, attended officer candidate school at Yale University and served in the 8th Air Force, in the 40th Air Depot Group, Bishop's Stortford, England from 1942 to 1945. After returning from England, Mr. McKenna earned his Master's degree in Education at Boston University. The McKennas moved to Connecticut in 1947 and he taught high school sciences at Old Saybrook High School. After a decade of managing the Sage Allen department store in Old Saybrook, he co-founded Marcolini and McKenna Insurance Agency on Main Street in Old Saybrook. He retired from the insurance business in 1983 and had many years to enjoy his children and grandchildren. Bill was active in the Old Saybrook community for many decades. He served as co-founder of the Summertime Art Show and as chairman of the building committee of the Acton Public Library. He was an active parishioner of St, John Church, Old Saybrook. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Bill McKenna will be remembered for his dedication to family and his wonderful sense of humor. Bill was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Russell McKenna of Cumberland, RI. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ann Emond McKenna, his children: Mary Ann McKenna Ferraguto of Alexandria, VA and her husband, Michael Ferraguto, Kathleen McKenna Fauteux of Newton, MA and her husband, Stephen Fauteux, Patricia McKenna Walden of Old Saybrook, CT and her husband, Thomas B. Walden, MD, and Michael McKenna of Wethersfield, CT and his wife, Patricia McKenna, his grandchildren: Kevin, Michael and Andrew Fauteux, Michael, Thomas and Christopher Ferraguto, Mary and Patrick McKenna, and great granddaughter Lila Ann Fauteux.
Calling hours will be held November 1st from 4-6 p.m. at Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Rd., Old Saybrook. The funeral procession will assemble at the funeral home on November 2nd, at 7 a.m. and will proceed to a 8 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Church, 161 Main St., Old Saybrook, CT.
