Willard Daniels Obituary

Dr. Willard Herbert Daniels, 91, died on November 23, 2015, at the Mansfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Storrs, Conn. Born to the late Lewis and Elizabeth (Roberts) Daniels, he grew up on the family's dairy farm in Middletown, Conn. Willard loved life on the farm and felt a deep connection to these roots throughout his life. As a young boy, he resolved to pursue a career in veterinary medicine when his much-loved pony sustained an injury requiring veterinary care. From here on, his career resolve never wavered, and, after graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1942, he entered Cornell University as a pre-veterinary student and later was admitted to the school's College of Veterinary Medicine. His education was interrupted, however, when he enlisted in the U. S. Army. Upon discharge, he returned to Cornell and shortly thereafter met his wife Jessie (née Bushnell). He received his DVM degree in 1949. Afterwards, he returned to Middletown to work with Dr. Niel Pieper. Several years later, he relocated and established the Guilford Veterinary Hospital, where he enjoyed his mixed animal practice for eleven years. In 1965, he was invited by the Dean of the College of Agriculture at the University of Connecticut to join the faculty in what was then the Dept. of Animal Diseases (later Dept. of Pathobiology) to serve as the Extension Veterinarian for the State of Connecticut. While at the University, he taught undergraduate courses in animal diseases and livestock management, authored many publications, provided veterinary care for the farm animals in the College of Agriculture, served as Pathobiology's Acting Department Head from 1969 to 1971, and its Assistant Department Head from 1971 to 1987. Perhaps his most rewarding responsibility was serving as advisor to the undergraduates in the pre-veterinary program. He was much loved by his students, always taking a special interest in advancing their careers. It was a great joy when one of his advisees gained acceptance to Veterinary school, and many of those he mentored are practicing veterinarians today. In 1987, Willard retired from the Dept. of Pathobiology as a full Professor after twenty-two years of service. Ever devoted to his profession, he was a member of many professional organizations, e.g., having served as President of the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association, as President of the New England Veterinary Medical Association, and as a Connecticut delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association. He was twice appointed by the Governor to a 5-year term on the state's Board of Veterinary Registration and Examination. In 1985, he was named Veterinarian of the Year by the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association. Following retirement from the University, he returned to practicing veterinary medicine on a part-time basis until being diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. In his last years, he continued to enjoy life. Even in the face of advancing dementia, he steadfastly maintained his friendly spirit and kind heart, always loving to be in the company of others. In addition to his beloved wife of 66 years Jessie, Willard leaves his sons Stephen, Willard Jr. (Bill) and wife Sue, Scott and wife Joanie; and his four grandchildren, Laura, Tim, Jessie, and Leigh. He is also survived by his sister Bette Moore, sisters-in-law Carrie Daniels and Jan Daniels, cousin Jane Mazzotta and her husband Guy, and many nieces, nephews, and friends whom he loved dearly. He was pre-deceased by his brothers Lewis and Raymond and brother-in-law Thomas Moore. A service commemorating Willard's life will be held on Wednesday, December 9th at 2 p.m. at the Storrs Congregational Church in Storrs, CT, where he was a member for nearly 50 years. A private interment in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Middletown, will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Willard's name to the Willard H. Daniels-Salvatore Orsini Scholarship Fund, Acct. #30316, University of Connecticut Foundation, 2390 Alumni Drive, Storrs, CT 06269 or to the Alzheimer's Association, CT Chapter, 2075 Silas Deane Highway, Rocky Hill, CT 06067. The family wishes to express its deepest gratitude to the staff at the Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation for the loving care provided to Willard during the last months of his life. Oh Uncle Bill how I miss you! Even though we lived 3000 miles apart during most of my adult years I always looked forward to your big bear hugs and kisses whenever I saw you. With your bigger than life personality you were always the life of the Daniels clan parties! I know you are up there with my parents, Lew & Jan, Tom, and many of the other family members and friends still sharing those good times.
Love,
Pam

Dr. Daniels was one of a kind. He helped us so much when we needed assistance from the pathology department at UConn. He's now joined Ray and Lew. A trio that is surely missed by many. Bill and I send our condolences to all the Daniels family. RIP Bill.

My condolences to Mrs. Daniels and their family for your loss. So very sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Daniels. Without his encouragement and guidance as my advisor at UCONN I would not have had the career I have had for the past 23 years. I was also very lucky to have been able to work with him at Colchester Veterinary Hospital. What a pleasant, friendly man who was such a light in enabling the path for many of his students to become veterinarians like him. I am one of them, and I am indebted to you, Sir: Thank you, Dr. Daniels.

This beautifully written obituary highlighted all of Bill's professional accomplishments but to me he was just my fun Uncle Bill who always greeted me with a bone-crushing hug and a big kiss. His personality was always larger than life and he certainly enlivened all of our family parties. Even as Alzheimer's slowly stole his mind his personality remained and in one of the last times I saw him we went to lunch and although he didn't know me. my mom, or his cousin Jane he was constantly smiling and as affectionate as ever. Like his sister and two brothers he valued family and friends and was rewarded by the closeness he had with his boys, daughter-in-laws, and grandchildren. He and Aunt Jessie had life-long friends and shared such a blessed life. As much as I will miss him I know that my dad, Uncle Lew, & Uncle Tom were waiting for him with open arms and they are probably telling those same old stories of their childhoods that seemed to come up every time the Daniels family got together. I love you Uncle Bill and will miss you.

This obituary highlighted all of Bill's professional accomplishments but to me he was just my fun Uncle Bill who was always joking and laughing and gave bone-crushing hugs and big wet kisses! His larger-than-life personality made him such a big part of our raucous Daniels Family's holidays and get-to-gethers. Even as Alzheimers slowly stole his mind his personality still remained and in one of the last times I saw him we went out to lunch and although he didn't know me, my mom, or his cousin Jane he had such a big smile on his face the whole time. He lived his life to the absolute fullest and like his two brothers and sister he knew the importance of family and friends. He was rewarded by the love of his sons, daughter-in-laws, & grandchildren; the adoration of his nieces & nephews; the closeness to his siblings and their spouses; the life-long friends he and Aunt Jessie shared; and the admiration of his students and colleagues. Although I am so sad that he is gone I know that he is now in the company of my dad, Uncle Lew, & Uncle Tom and they are up there telling those same old stories that came out every time we got together. I know they are all smiling and laughing!

Hello, this is Doug Peck in Plano, TX. My father Howard Daniels Peck was Bill's first cousin. As Dad was an only child, Bill, Louie, Ray and Bette were siblings to him growing up. My grandparents Horace H. Peck and Grace Daniels Peck resided at 364 Ridge Road in Middletown. I have many fond memories of trips to visit my grandparents as a kid. The highlight was always the day spent at the farm where we roamed free, supervised the milking of the cows, were afraid of the bull and ended the day with a clandestine raid on the freezer for ice cream sandwiches. Always remember Bill as a kind, gentle man and always a favorite of Dad's. Good times!
