2 LT Anthony "Tony" Scardino
Second Lieutenant Anthony "Tony" Scardino, 27, of Hattiesburg, died on Friday, August 8, 2014 at Fort Gordon, Georgia while he was enrolled in the Basic Officer Leadership Course and participating in a Land Navigation training exercise. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Oak Grove United Methodist Church followed by interment at 3 p.m. in Hillview Cemetery in Bogalusa, LA.
After receiving a Bachelor's of Arts in Pre-Law from Mississippi College with a 4.00 GPA, Tony was awarded Juris Doctorate from Mississippi College in May of 2014. A week before his death he sat for the Mississippi State Bar exam. Commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Army National Guard, he was undergoing initial officer training. Following that training he was scheduled to serve as Law Clerk for Chief Federal District Court Judge Louis Guirola, Jr., of the Southern District of Mississippi.
During law school, Tony was a member of Law Review, served on the Moot Court Board, and was awarded membership into The Order of Barristers. He was an outstanding student, selfless soldier, and a wonderful man.
Tony enlisted in the Mississippi Army National Guard in 2003 as a satellite communication systems operator-maintainer, achieving the rank of staff sergeant during more than 10 years of enlisted service. He deployed twice to Afghanistan in 2006 and 2009.
During his military career, Tony received the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Mississippi War Medal, the Mississippi Emergency Service Medal and the Parachutists Badge.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Joyce Scardino, Jr. and Mabra and Elzie Townsend.
He is survived by his wife, Katy Sicola Scardino of Baytown, TX; his parents, Leonard and Sandra Scardino, Sr. of Hattiesburg; a brother, Lenny (Theresa) Scardino, Jr. of Hattiesburg; father-in-law, William Sicola of Baytown, TX; a brother-in-law, Joseph (Charlene) Sicola of Baytown, TX; three nieces, Tiffany, Hailey, and Kristen Scardino; and three nephews, Rave, Keynai, and Knox Sicola.
