Dr. Iskander Saloum-Hamwi

Hattiesburg, MS

Dr. Iskander "Alex" Saloum-Hamwi passed away on December 17, 2013, after a lengthy illness. Alex was a life-long academian who found a vocation in teaching and research in his field of insurance and actuarial science. He retired as a finance professor from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2003. He was born and raised in Lattakia, Syria, and after graduating from the University of Damascus, he came to the United States on a Fulbright Scholarship, earning a Master's Degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Michigan. He then received his Ph.D. from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Despite the numerous places he passed through with studies and work after leaving his homeland, he considered Hattiesburg home. He is predeceased by his parents George and Nabiha. Alex is survived by his wife, Gail Hamwi of Hattiesburg, MS; a brother, Adel Hamwi of Damascus, Syria; a sister, Hayat Yazigi of Sacramento, California; and his son, Alexander Hamwi of Springfield, Missouri, along with many loving nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by family and friends. Services will be private.
