Thomas Ray Thornhill
Thomas Ray Thornhill 73, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS.
Mr. Thornhill is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Ola Mae McKenzie Thornhill.
Tom leaves his wife of 52 years, Peggy Toney Thornhill; three sons, Toney Thornhill (Debbie) of Nashville, TN, Terrell Thornhill (Janine) of Nashville, TN, and Timothy Thornhill of Hattiesburg, MS; a daughter, Tammy Thornhill Laub (Mark, Jr.) of Memphis, TN; a sister, Wanda Carney of Bogalusa, LA; a brother, Harry Lloyd Thornhill of St. Francisville, LA; and eight grandchildren.
Thomas Ray (Tom) was from Foxworth MS, a graduate of Columbia High School, and a member of the Mississippi National Guard. After serving four years in the military, he worked as a locomotive fireman with GM&O Railroad. In December 1960, he married Peggy Ellen Toney from Bogalusa, LA. They had four children and resided in Hattiesburg, MS. Tom managed the Singer Sewing Machine Company in Cloverleaf Mall until its closing. He later spent much of his career as a Sales Representative for the automotive industry. Since 1993, he worked at Walmart Supercenter on Hwy 98 as a Customer Service Representative in the Automotive Department.
Tom was a member of Temple Baptist Church and was well known in the community for his faith, compassion, and unconditional love for others. Anyone that ever had the honor of meeting him never had a harsh word to say about him. He always put others needs before his. He put a smile on the face of everyone that crossed his path with his wonderful charm, unconventional humor and wit. He left this earth the way he loved to live it, surrounded by and in the midst of his family members who adored him. The Lord called him home to a better place and he will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Services will be at 2:00 PM Sunday, February 10, 2013, at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg with visitation beginning at 12:30 PM. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia, MS, with Military Rites performed by VFW Post 3036 Honor Guard.
