The Guest Book is expired.
Born in Hattiesburg on May 23, 1923, Travis H. Boykin, Jr. died at his residence in Hattiesburg on November 2, 2012 at age 89.
Travis was a loyal member of Trinity Episcopal Church for many years and participated regularly in Wednesday morning services until his health failed and he was no longer able to participate. Prior to joining Trinity in Hattiesburg, Travis attended services for many years in New Orleans at the Christ Church Cathedral.
During World War II Travis was in the Navy on active duty from 1943 to 1946, during which time he served aboard several ships. He also attended the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee for specialized communications training.
Travis attended several other universities, beginning with Southern Miss and then switching to Tulane University prior to entering the service. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.
Travis was preceded in death by his father and mother, Travis Hardy Boykin, Sr. and Augusta Nirdlinger Boykin, and two sisters, Jane Ester Boykin and Betsy Nirdlinger Boykin.
Throughout his adult life, several jobs took Travis from Hattiesburg to New Orleans to Houston, Texas, and back to Hattiesburg. He worked in advertising in Houston and worked as a job counselor for the State of Louisiana in New Orleans. Travis returned home to Hattiesburg to open a highly stylized retail shop selling top of the line merchandise imported from Scandinavian countries. Skandia, located on Hardy Street, was open from 1971 to 1997.
A native of Hattiesburg who loved his community, Travis will be missed by his friends who enjoyed his company and conversation.
Burial of Travis' ashes will be in the Gulf of Mexico at a spot picked out by him prior to his death. No formal memorial service other than a private gathering for the burial is scheduled.
Memorial donations may be made to
