Virginia McElhaney Stringer slipped gently from this life on February 19, 2014. She was born June 20, 1920 in Ellisville, MS.
She was preceded in death by her parents, L.F. and Alma G. Wilkins; brothers, Dr. Louie Wilkins and Robert Wilkins; and sister, Dorothy Willoughby.
She is survived by three sons, Michael J. McElhaney, Jr. (Diane) of Pascagoula, MS, Richard F. McElhaney (Lynne) of Mobile, AL, and Robert L. McElhaney (Kim) of Ridgeland, MS; one daughter, Michelle McElhaney of Hattiesburg, MS; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Virginia was raised in Jackson, MS where she graduated from Jackson Central High School with honors. On October 2, 1938, she married Michael J. McElhaney, Sr. and they moved to Hattiesburg, MS where they raised their children. She received her Masters of Education from the University of Southern Mississippi where she never received a grade below A. Her children followed in her foot steps as all three of her sons have received Doctorate Degrees.
For approximately thirty years Virginia taught grade school, junior high and high school in the Hattiesburg, Mississippi School System. Her husband, Michael J. McElhaney, Sr. was deceased in 1975. Sixteen years later Virginia married Wendall Stringer and she moved to Chillicothe, Ohio until his death in 2006. Virginia then returned to her home in Hattiesburg, MS. Her hobbies included playing bridge, reading, traveling, cooking and dancing, particularly square dancing. She was loved and will be greatly missed by her entire family.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at Highland Cemetery.
