MEDCALFE, ELEANOR (NELL) died on August 12th, 2014. Born at St. Francis Hospital in Miami Beach to early Dade County educators, Nelson F. and Vera T. Coburn, she was educated at the Coburn School and graduated from St. Patrick's High School. She attended the University of Florida where she met her husband Pete, and pledged Delta Gamma Sorority. When her daughters were in junior high, she joined the first student body at Florida International University where she earned both her Bachelors and Masters Degrees. A gifted writer, Nell's work appeared in The Miami Herald's Tropic Magazine under her pen name Eleanor Chapin, and in several literary magazines and anthologies. In 1996, she was awarded first place winner for creative nonfiction by the South Florida Chapter of the National Writers Association. Nell will be missed by her family, the many friends she made over the years, especially the ones she made in her writers' and the weekly literature groups she was in. She is survived by Pete, her husband of 63 years, daughter Carol C. Medcalfe, daughter and son-in-law Jeanne and Robert E. Panoff, and step-grandson Dr. Joseph E. Panoff (Vicky), and her brother Ralph Coburn, formerly of Gloucester, Massachusetts. In the place of flowers, contributions may be made to the or the American Heart Society.
