Eugenie Merritt Dunn, 62, passed away on May 11, 2014. Genie was born and raised in New Orleans. Genie graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics from the Newcomb College of Tulane University in 1973. In 1978, she earned her Master of Education degree in Administration and Supervision from the University of Miami. Genie was an administrator and mathematics teacher for Miami-Dade County Public Schools from 1973 until her retirement in 2012. Genie taught all levels of high school mathematics as well as computer science courses. After 34 years as a classroom teacher, department chairperson and distinguished leader in mathematics education, Genie became the District Supervisor of Mathematics for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. She was one of the first teachers in Miami-Dade County to earn recognition as a National Board Certified Teacher in Mathematics. In 2002, Genie was selected as the Teacher of the Year at Miami Killian Senior High School, as the Region V Teacher of the Year, and as one of five finalists for Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year. She was a national leader in teacher development through the use of math learning communities. Genie, however, was most proud of her family. She is survived by her husband and best friend, Ray, daughter Virginia (Ginger) and son-in-law Chad, son Casey and daughter-in-law Kelly, as well as grandchildren Annabelle, Wesley and Georgia. She is also survived by her father, Thomas B. Merritt, and siblings Tim Merritt, Preston Merritt, Abigail Brown and Mary Margaret Cazalot. Services will be held at St. Louis Catholic Church, 7270 SW 120th Street, Pinecrest, FL, on Tuesday, May 20th. A wake will be held from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, immediately followed by a Funeral Mass.
