Born to Abram and Hazel Baird in Minnesota, the third of nine children, Dorothy Jacobsen, 86, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2013, in Everett, to join her loving husband, Marvell, whom she missed dearly.
Dorothy Maxine Baird
Dorothy lived nearly all of her life in five different houses within two blocks of Lake Ki. One had been built by her father and four by her husband, Marv.
Dorothy loved her community second only to her family and spent her life serving in many capacities to make Lake Ki and Lakewood the best place in which to raise a family.
Dorothy served the Lakewood PTA as President, as well as in many other capacities, and received the Golden Acorn award for her efforts on behalf of the community. She received awards for being a blood donor, was Superintendent of Faith Lutheran Sunday School, was President and held other offices for Lake Goodwin Community Club, and was a big part of the effort to establish Seven Lakes Water District and the Lake Goodwin Fire Department. Dorothy was one of the first women to train for the all-volunteer fire department where she fought fires and drove the fire truck. Seeing a need for fire coverage during the day when most men went to work, she and a couple of other women became fire fighters. Her children's friends were always surprised to learn the hat, boots and coat by the door were not her husband's, but hers.
Dorothy was a true "Rosie the Riveter" during the war and later spent many years working at Lakewood Store and Lake Goodwin Store before taking a job at Shopland in Everett. She then worked for The Boeing Company, from which she retired.
Dorothy was very grateful for the frequent and excellent care she received from local emergency responders from her beloved "Lake Goodwin Fire Department." The family wishes to thank them and the outstanding Group Health doctors and nurses who cared for Dorothy as well as the staff at Providence Everett Medical Center Colby Campus.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Marvell; three children, Mary Joan, Sandra Lynn, and an infant son; her granddaughter, Nicole Mutschler; her parents, Abram and Hazel; and her siblings, George (Jean) Baird, Laura (Joe) Livramento, Arthur Baird, Lawrence Baird, Norma (Howard) Simmons and Ramona Steinbaugh; brothers-in-law, Gus Zootis, Arnold (Viola) Jacobsen and Vern Jacobsen; and sister-in-law Lillian (Leo) Hoidal.
She is survived by her children, Marcia (John) Comer, Lorrie Mutschler, David (Renita) Jacobsen, and Stephen (Shirley) Jacobsen. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christina Jacobsen, Jeff Mutschler (fiancé, Kelly Thomas), step-grandchildren, Angela (Jeff) Loushin, Chris Powell and Stacey (Daniel) Chapman, her brothers, Harry (Yvonne) Baird and Ron (Pam) Baird, brothers-in-law, William Steinbaugh, Ernest (Ruth) Jacobsen, William (Betty, deceased) Jacobsen, sisters-in-law, Janice Baird, MaryEllen Baird, Jean Rose; and many nieces and nephews whom she adored. To many she will always be "Auntie Dot" and her many friends who called her "Mom" will miss her spunky spirit.
Dorothy did not wish to have a funeral service.
A family gathering will be announced at a later date.
The family wishes to especially thank Dorothy's daughter, Lorrie, for being her caring companion in recent years.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Lakewood High School Sports Boosters, P.O. Box 171, North Lakewood, WA 98259, to Children's Hospital or to
. "May Dorothy rest in peace after her long and courageous life."
