Elizabeth "Bette" S. Hathaway

Elizabeth S. "Bette" Hathaway, 93, of Mill Creek, Washington died December 26, 2012. She had suffered from dementia for a number of years.
Bette was born Elizabeth Ann Shorett on December 5, 1919, to John B. and Georgia L. Shorett of West Seattle. She graduated from West Seattle High School in 1938, and attended the University of Washington. Bette was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Her father, John, was a prominent Seattle attorney who served as Chairman of the Seattle School Board, was influential in the development of the Duwamish waterway, and ran for mayor of Seattle. Other members of her family included her uncle, Arthur Loveless, a well-known Seattle architect, brother Jack and brother LaMonte Shorett, a Seattle architect.
She married William G. (Bill) Hathaway on January 31, 1942. She followed her husband's military career across the nation, living in various towns around western Washington, South Carolina, Mississippi, Utah, Alabama, Texas, and California before settling in Mill Creek, Washington, in 1986. Although Bette always considered the Seattle area her 'home base', she actively integrated herself into each town through volunteer work and various arts classes. She was also active in the Officers' Wives Club at various Air Force bases. She was at her husband's side when he retired from the Air Force as a Brigadier General, having earned her 'star' along with him.
Bette loved sightseeing, dancing, music, painting, and cruising antique shops but her special 'passion' was the family cabin at Appletree Cove north of Kingston, Washington. Her family had spent summers there since 1907 and members of the family continued to have a presence there until the late 60's. She loved swimming in the Sound, crabbing, clamming, picking blackberries and spending time with her family.
Bette is survived by her husband of almost 71 years, Bill; her daughter, Christine "Tina" (Greg) Tyler of Shelton; son, Michael (Patti) Hathaway of Edmonds; her grandchildren, Ryan Harbert, Kyle Harbert, Cameron Hathaway, Courtney Hathaway; great-granddaughter, Penelope Harbert.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, John B. "Jack" Shorett, Jr, and LaMonte Shorett; and sister, Louise Thurlow.
Remembrances can be made to the Alzheimer's Organization at www.alz.org or the Humane Society.
