James Robert Updike Echelbarger
Mar. 15, 1968–June 10, 2013

James Robert Updike Echelbarger passed away in his sleep on June 10, 2013 in Everett. He was born James Robert Zoellin in Carmel, California, and known as Rob to his family. He and his brother, Sean moved to Washington with their mother in 1977. Lindsey and Carolyn were married in 1980 and Lindsey adopted Rob and his brother Sean in 1981.
A graduate of Woodway High School, he attended Whitman College for 1.5 years and graduated from the University of Washington in 1992 with a degree in mathematics. Rob was a loyal Husky fan and followed their teams closely. He loved the outdoors and hiking in the Cascades. He once climbed Mt. Rainier to within 400 feet of the summit when a storm prevented his team from continuing.
Rob was very proud of his service in the Army where he trained with the Prime Power unit at Fort Belvoir, VA. He was an avid reader, loved history, writing and anything that was intellectually challenging.
Rob's adult life was challenged by schizophrenia but with the love and support of his family and mental health personnel he was able to live independently and contently. He will be remembered for his nice smile and kind words to others, his diligence, his intelligence and his love of family. Rest now in peace.
He is survived by his parents, Carolyn and Lindsey Echelbarger; brothers, Sean and Nicholas (wife, Caitlin) Echelbarger; newborn niece, Helen; grandfather, Leo Dean Echelbarger; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A private service was held at Beck's Funeral Home in Edmonds, WA.
