Marlynn June Moeller Porter, known to her friends as "Marly" passed away Saturday, March 18, 2013 in Peoria, Illinois. She was 88. Marly was born May 30, 1924 in LaSalle, Illinois to Edward William Moeller and Marie Gladys Shullaw Moeller.
Marlynn June Porter
A graduate of Peoria High School, Marly attended Northwestern University graduating Cum Laud with a B.A. from Bradley University in 1946. She was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. At Bradley, she was active in home service work for the American Red Cross and she was inspired to serve others through volunteer status throughout her life. She was particularly proud of her work as a Hospice volunteer.
Marly married Carl H. Porter, Jr. the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl H. Porter, Sr. of Pekin, Illinois on March 16, 1946. The couple moved to Ketchikan, Alaska on their first wedding anniversary and resided there until they retired. Their children, Carl H. Porter III "Chip" and Lisa were born there.
Marly was active in the P.E.O. sisterhood, Alaska A chapter and she enjoyed interesting occupations, insurance agent, lecturer and owner/manager of the Voyageur Bookstore in Ketchikan. Especially noteworthy was Marly's development of a port lecturing program for the Princess Cruise Line, a British-American cruise line with ports of call to nearly 260 ports around the world including Ketchikan and Juneau. As a result, today the cruise line employs guest lecturers who enrich the cruise experience by providing presentations appropriate to the ships' itinerary around the globe.
Following her tenure as Mrs. Alaska (1960-61), Marly took a pageant leadership role mentoring contestants and joining a prestigious panel of judges. Together, with her husband Carl, she contributed to the success of civic affairs in the community and often hosted and entertained state and foreign officials in their home.
The Porters retired to Camano Island, Washington in 1983 and took up golf, gardening and travel. Later they resided in Minden, Nevada and Palm Desert, California before returning home to Peoria.
Marly is survived by her husband of 67 years, Carl Porter of Peoria; her son, "Chip" Porter of Ketchikan, Alaska; her daughter, Lisa Simono of Hope, Alaska; four grandchildren, Britteny Matero of Anchorage, Alaska, Benson Short and Emily Ward of Silverton, Oregon, and Andrea Wargi of Juneau, Alaska; and nine great-grandchildren.
"My mother was smart and interesting, courageous and elegant. She was the best mother for my brother and me and she was the perfect wife for Carl." Lisa Simono
