Boyd, Allen Richards "Dick"

Allen Richards Boyd (Dick) of Sarasota, Florida, succumbed to cancer on August 22, 2013. Dick was the son of John Ritchie and Mary Juliet Williams Boyd of Mount Kisco, N.Y., He graduated from Princeton University in 1955 and was enlisted as a Naval Air Intelligence Officer on the aircraft carrier, USS Forrestal, from 1956 to 1959. He received his MA from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in 1960.
In the following decade, Allen R. Boyd assisted the United States Foreign Service in providing support to the newly-independent Democratic Republic of the Congo. While there, he served as the Managing Editor for the Congolese Army Newspaper, and as adviser to the Congolese Education and Information Services in Kinshasa from 1964 to 1966. Returning to the United States, Dick worked as an editorial writer for Scholastic Magazines and in the Marketing Division of Scholastic Book Services.
In 1970, Dick founded African Imprint Library Services Company in an effort to provide African literature, periodicals and government publications to universities and research libraries around the world. The company went on to provide Caribbean publications as well. Over the years, Allen R. Boyd penned a number of books on Africa including: Tropical and Southern Africa; Scholastic World Cultures Program; and Africa: Teaching Guide.
An intrepid traveler, Dick had a passion for collecting antique maps and books of the West Indies. He was a talented linguist, sailor and pilot who was also an avid tennis player and golfer. He will be dearly remembered for his enduring optimism, compassion, generosity, sharp wit, and very dry sense of humor.
A loving husband and father, Dick is survived by his wife, Candace, and his six children from his first marriage: Scott, Christopher, Stephanie, Rebecca, Robert, and Peter. Together Dick and his wife have eighteen grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Juliet Patterson, and brother Edgar (Bill) Boyd.
A memorial service will be held at St. Boniface Episcopal Church, Siesta Key, Fl. on Saturday, September 14, at 11:00 a.m.
In October a family burial service will be held at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Bedford, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Research Foundation.
