Charles W. Gonnello, 85, formerly of West Springfield, Massachusetts, died in Osprey, FL on December 28, 2013, after a valiant 2 year fight with cancer. A Celebration of Chuck's life will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Osprey on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 10:00 am. Inurnment will be at the Sarasota National Cemetery, Sarasota, followed by a luncheon at the Arbors Mobile Home Park Clubhouse.
Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Maureen (Driscoll) Gonnello, daughter, Kathleen of Osprey, FL, sons, Charles of Tampa, FL, Mark and wife Gina of Le Mesa, CA, Scott of Sarasota, FL and Michael and wife Susan, West Springfield, MA and 8 grandchildren.
Chuck was born to the late Charles & Josephine (Roberti) Gonnello of Springfield, MA. He attended Williston Academy in Easthampton, MA and Suffield Academy in Suffield, CT. He entered the U.S. Army and served six years in the Occupation of Germany, later enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, where he completed his 23 years of military service, 14 of which were served on foreign soil. He was a Veteran of WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. He always felt the highlight of his career was serving on the last Military Honor Guard for the late President John F. Kennedy, the day prior to his assassination.
After completing his military career, he attended Westfield State College, Westfield, MA, for a Bachelor's Degree in Social Science. He was appointed the first Professional Executive Director for the Council on Aging in West Springfield, MA. The Senior Center was built during his administration. He resigned in 1988 and came to Osprey with Maureen to enjoy their retirement.
Chuck will be greatly missed by many; he was a gentle man, ready to help all, faith filled, loved his family, country and the Arbors Mobile Home Park.
