Christopher S. Sharp Obituary
Sharp, Christopher S.
Oct. 1, 1929 - Nov. 16, 2012
Christopher Samuel Sharp passed away on November 16 at the age of 83. A resident of Venice, Florida since 2001, Christopher passed away at home after a brief illness.
He was born in North Augusta, SC in 1929, the third child of Charles and Mabel Sharpe. He grew up in the North Augusta area along with his three brothers David, Joseph, and Jim Sharpe and two sisters Vera and Mary Sharpe. After graduating high school he enlisted in the Army, and following his discharge attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC. During his undergraduate years he was elected president of the Wofford College student body. He graduated with a degree in Biology. While attending Wofford he met and married Hazel Henegar. They would spend nearly forty wonderful years together until her passing in 1991.
Building on his academic credentials, he obtained a Master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC. Christopher's professional career started as a high school science professor. He progressed from there to be named the first Chancellor of the University of South Carolina branch located in Aiken, SC. After successfully getting the branch started, he left the education field to become a Methodist minister.
Deciding that the ministry was not his true calling, Christopher returned to academia and matriculated at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC where he obtained his doctorate in Education. Upon graduation, he accepted the position of Dean at Lander College in Greenwood, South Carolina. A few years later, he left to become the Director of Graduate Studies at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, GA. His final post in academia was as Head of the Education Department at North Georgia University in Dahlonega, GA. While at North Georgia he grew the Education department dramatically and pioneered the process of off-campus studies. He retired from North Georgia in 1986.
In the years following his retirement, his wife Hazel passed away. Several years later he married Diane Roper. After many blissful years of living in the mountains of Dahlonega, Ga., they moved to a wonderful neighborhood in Venice, Florida. They were married for seventeen happy years.
Christopher was an avid golfer, loved Biblical history, and taught Bible studies. He loved the Lord and lived his life as a testament to that.
Christopher is survived by his wife Diane, his children Stephen (Carolyn) and Sandra (Gary) Blohm, grandchildren Melissa (Robert), Christopher, Kathleen, & David, great grandchildren Connor, Jackson, & Sawyer. From his marriage to Diane he is survived by step children Lauren, Scott (Vanessa) and Rob and step grandchildren Nicholas, Hunter, & Benjamin. He is also survived by his sister Vera Bell.
Memorial contributions may be made to Venice Presbyterian Church, 825 The Rialto in Venice, Fla. 34285.
Dr. Sharp will be laid to rest in Sarasota National Cemetery with U.S. Army honors at 10 AM Tuesday, November 20th. A celebration of his life will take place at 2:00 PM also on Tuesday, November 20th at Venice Presbyterian Church. Farley Funeral Home, Venice Chapel has been selected to care for arrangements.
