Dennis Russell Robarts, 62, of Wauchula, son of Wilfrid T. Robarts, namesake of the Robarts Sports Arena in Sarasota, and Bonnie Bessie Ellis Robarts of Sarasota, died in Sebring on April 5, 2014. Dennis was born in Sarasota on Oct. 27, 1951 and moved to Wauchula in 1997. He was the owner of Robarts Family Funeral Home until 2012, retiring for health reasons. Dennis was a former police chief with Bradenton Beach police Department, former deputy with Sarasota County Sheriff Office, and former member of Hardee County Sheriff's Office Citizens Advisory Board. He held memberships with the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Florida Police Chiefs Association, and Sons of Confederacy. He was a graduate of Admiral Farragut Academy, and was a member at First Baptist Church of Wauchula.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah J. Robarts, a sister, Bonnie Gay, and parents, Wilfrid T. and Bonnie E. Robarts.
Survivors include his son, Dennis R. Robarts II and wife Summer of Wauchula; grandchildren, Alexandra and Russell; brothers, Donald Robarts (Denise) of Bradenton, Thomas Robarts (Barb) of Sarasota, Henry Robarts of NC, and Jerry Robarts of Defuniak Springs; sisters, Patricia Robarts of Sarasota, Arlene Thompson (Jack) of Naples, and Anne Marie Hollan (John) of Jacksonville.
Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 10th at Robarts Garden Chapel, 529 W. Main St. Wauchula. Services are Friday at 12:15 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Wauchula, 1570 W. Main St., with interment in Wauchula Cemetery.
