Diana Kay Sisson Batten died at home on November 25, 2013. Born in 1948, she was the daughter of Elizabeth Dickinson Sisson and William A. Sisson. She is survived by her husband, James C.; son, Todd N.; brother, Donald W. Sisson; four nephews, and two nieces. Many - including neighbors, professional colleagues, clients, and church members - called her friend. Her career as a professional social worker spanned 42 years. She served in general welfare, child welfare, adoption, developmental disabilities, AIDS, and Hospice. She was certified in spiritual counseling. Students at Wayne State University, the University of Michigan, Hunter College, Rutgers, and Stockton State College called her "professor." Diana received the B.A. from Ohio University, Masters from Case Western Reserve University, and the Doctorate from Hunter College School of Social Work of the City University of New York. During her working years the Battens lived in Pittsburgh, PA; East Liverpool and Cleveland Heights, OH; Detroit, MI; and Ocean Township and Absecon, N.J. Upon retirement they relocated to Siesta Key, FL where they had vacationed for thirty years. During her two years' residency in Florida, she volunteered for the Mote Aquarium on its Snowy Plover project and worked with the Democratic Party and Obama for America. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Sarasota. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Sarasota Memorial Hospital, 1515 S. Osprey Avenue, Sarasota, FL 34239 or the Child Protection Center, 720 S. Orange Avenue, Sarasota, FL 34236. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 104 S. Pineapple Avenue, Sarasota on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 2:00 PM.
