Dr. Donald A. Pitt, 85, of Sarasota died March 8, 2012.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Sarasota National Cemetery. National Cremation & Burial Society are handling the arrangements.
Survivors include loving wife, Doris Bille; sons Dr. David G. of Loveland, Colo. and Eric S. of Miami, Fla., and two grandchildren.
He was born June 19, 1926 in Glen Ridge, N.J. and came to Sarasota 27 years ago, from Saint Paul, Minn. Dr. Pitt retired in 1985 from Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M Co.) as Staff Scientist in the Corporate Research Laboratory, after 32 years service. His specialties were photographic science, particle technology and thermo chemistry. Dr. Pitt graduated from Princeton University with an M.A. in organic chemistry and Ph.D. in chemical research. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and many other professional associations. Dr. Pitt enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1943, took a commission in 1949 and retired with the rank of Commander. His hobby has been language study, and he spoke fluent Italian, Danish and French.
