Donald Ralph Crist, 86, of Atlantic Beach, FL, formerly of Sarasota, FL and Castine, ME, died on March 29, 2014. Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Mon., April 28, 2014 at Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach, FL. Funeral arrangements by: Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach, FL.
Don was born in Chicago on March 15, 1928. He graduated from Beloit College in 1950, with a B.A. in political science, and served in the US Army from 1950 to 1952. Following discharge, he returned to college for premed science courses, attended medical school at Wake Forest University (1954-1958), and practiced orthopedic surgery in Sarasota for 24 years (1964-1988).
Don was especially interested in sports medicine, having served as team physician for the University of Florida varsity athletic teams (1963-1964), orthopedic consultant for major-league baseball teams, and founder/director of the Sports Medicine Center of Sarasota. He was a pioneer in the use of arthroscopic surgery, and he worked tirelessly to serve the medical needs of high school athletes and disadvantaged children. In his retirement, he enjoyed pursuing physical fitness, traveling, singing in community choruses, and serving as a Volunteer Guardian ad Litem and hospice care volunteer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Judith Starr Crist, a brother, seven grown sons and daughters, eleven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
