Emerson was predeceased by his son Mark, brother, Wayne, sister, Doris and his parents Wayne and Bessie.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years Margaret, and sons Carl and Alan (and their spouses Elaine and Marcella).
A graduate of the University of Illinois and Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Wittbecker retired as Director of Carothers Nylon Research Laboratory for DuPont. He held several Canadian and American patents for several novel fibers; his research projects lead directly to the development of Kevlar, Nomex and other useful fibers.
During World War II, he worked on projects for military applications, He started as a chemist for DuPont in 1942 and retired in 1978. He was the author of numerous articles on Polyurethane analogs, polyamides, polymerization, and interfacial polycondensation; he was Editor of Macromolecular Syntheses.
He refused an invitation of a Professorship in Polymer Chemistry and worked for several years as a consultant in computing and later ecological chemistry. He and Margaret retired to Florida in 1990.
