Connelly, John Joseph

Oct. 21, 1924 - Jun. 7, 2014

John Joseph Connelly, 89, of Sarasota, FL passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his family on Saturday, June 7, 2014. He was born on October 21, 1924 in Jersey City, NJ, son of the late John J. Connelly Sr. and Mary (Leroux) Connelly. While growing up in Jersey City, he met and married "his girl" Mary (Lorusso) Connelly. They lovingly raised their family in East Rutherford and Franklin Lakes, NJ before moving to Sarasota in 1976. John was a graduate of Dickinson High School, class of 1942. He was an Army veteran of WWII, a staff sergeant, and was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded near Aachen, Germany in 1944. Following his service, he had a career in sales for many years in the New York and New Jersey area. With his family, he enjoyed the Jersey shore in the summer, crowded family weekends at Mystic Island clamming, boating, playing horseshoes and relaxing on the dock. In later years, there were annual summer trips to the mountains of western North Carolina where he and Mary spent time with their grandchildren playing shuffleboard, lots of card games and endless meals. He was an avid reader of military history and politics and enjoyed lively conversations on these subjects. John was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary in 1999. He leaves behind his children, Kathleen Bockoski and her husband Stan, Sean Connelly and his partner Maribeth Liberty, and Kevin Connelly and his wife Sheri (Williams) of Bloomfield, CT. He also leaves his grandchildren John and Kathleen Connelly of Bloomfield, and his sister Dorothy Clarke. The ashes of John and his loving wife Mary will be interred together. Graveside services with military honors will be at the Sarasota National Cemetery on Tuesday, June 24th at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Tidewell Hospice, Philanthropy Dept., 5955 Rand Blvd. Sarasota, FL 34238 or givetotidewell.org. The family would like to thank the staffs of Tidewell Hospice, and Approved Home Health Care for the dedicated care they provided to John over the past two months. Arrangements are by Jennings Funeral Home & Crematory.
