Melvin Eugene Kizer, 92, of Sarasota, Florida, left this earth and joined the heavenly choir on May 11, 2013. He was born in Harlan, IN; the son of Rev. William R. and Gracia M. Kizer. He was the youngest of 3 children. Melvin attended the local schools and graduated from Harlan High School in 1939. Melvin was an ordained minister and member of the Brookside Evangelical Mennonite Church in Fort Wayne, IN.
Upon graduation from high school he attended Indiana University and in 1945 became a member of United States Armed Forces Institute as a Modern News Reporter, serving in Lyon, France. He furthered his education by attending Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, receiving his B.A. degree in Journalism and Psychology. He also graduated from Fort Wayne Bible College with a degree in missions. His career spanned a wide variety of professions. He worked as an insurance inspector, a quality control employee and inspector for General Motors Corp. and also for Hughes Aircraft Corp in California.
His passion for life was serving Christ. He, with his wife, Nancy H., served many years in Hong Kong, China and Macau, under OMS International, Inc. He attended the Chinese Language Center becoming proficient in the Cantonese language. He served as a part time Lecturer of English at Hong Kong Shue Yan College, and as Liaison between the British and Hong Kong government for construction of a ten-story Educational building. Out of their love for the Chinese people, Yan Ying Church, was born resulting from their work among teenagers living in the H block buildings of Hong Kong during the 1980's. That church has recently celebrated it's 30th anniversary. Since returning to America he was a substitute teacher in all school grades in Florida and Indiana, and also taught ESOL in night school. Following the death of his wife he returned to China where he taught the English language to hotel, and industry employees.
He was preceded in death by his two siblings, Charles and Leota and his previous wife Nancy Hostetler Kizer. He is survived by his loving wife, Darla C. Kizer. He is survived by two children: Mickey Kizer and Laenette (Kevin) Zeller, now deceased, both of Defiance, OH. Two grandsons: Scott (Ruth) Graber of Stryker, OH; and John K. Zeller of Pittsburg, PA; two granddaughters; Mrs. James S. Goudie of Acton, MA; and Emily J. Zeller of Mt. Vernon, OH; He has four step-daughters; Dianne (Jim) Henderson of Fort Wayne, IN; Jean Ann Pilgrim of Sarasota; Kathie (Jimmie) Driggers; and V. Susan (Ted) Comes of Myakka City, FL and two step-sons; David (Anita) Yancey of Summerville, FL and Daniel Yancey of Myakka City, FL. He is survived by two great grandsons, along with one Nephew, Gregory Kizer of Harlan, IN.
There will be no local services. Arrangements for the Memorial Service in Indiana are pending at this time and will be announced later.
