Morris David (Mike) Goodfriend, age 96, of Sarasota, Florida, formerly of Athens, Tennessee, passed away in Sarasota, Florida on Friday, September 13, 2013. He was born in Knoxville, TN on October 16, 1916, and lived his life in Athens, TN until he moved to Sarasota, FL in 1991. Mike attended McMinn County High School for 3 years, and graduated from Columbia Military Academy. He attended the Un. of Alabama, graduating in 1938 and was President of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity. Mike attended Northwestern University in 1938-1939, receiving a graduate degree in Retail Merchandising. He worked for Mandel Brothers Department Store in 1939-1941 in Chicago, until Uncle Sam called on July 5, 1941. Mike went into the service as a First LT Army Air Corp, and was promoted to Captain on Feb. 1, 1942. He served in Biloxi, Mississippi, and Ogden, Utah and was sent to England in September, 1943 until Dec. 1945, when the war was over. Mike was in the Air Corp Reserve until 1957 as a Lt. Colonel. After working in Gadsden, AL for one year, he started working in his father's men's clothing store in Athens, TN in 1947- M. Goodfriend. In 1953 he and a partner opened the Athens Outlet Store. That grew to 383 stores known as Goody's Family Clothing. He bought out his partner and ran the business with his son, Robert M. Goodfriend, who joined him after college graduation in 1972. He retired officially from there when he was 75. Mike received an Honorary Doctor of Public Service from Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1987. He was inducted into the "Community Builders Hall of Fame" by the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 15, 1992. Of all his many accomplishments, he was most proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom loved him so very much. He was generous with his family and with many local and national charities. He was loved by all who knew him as he was a very special man. Mike loved golf and played until he was 90 years old, He was a wonderful bridge player and played until his passing. Mike was a 32nd degree Mason in the Shriners, a member of the Elks Club, and a long time member of Temple Beth El in Knoxville, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Ricka Goodfriend, and wife Shirlie B. Goodfriend. Mike is survived by: Daughter Linda Johnson, and husband Gary, of Maryville, TN Son Robert M. Goodfriend, and wife Wendy, of Knoxville, TN Grandchildren: Ashley Hollis and husband Jeff, of Gallatin, TN Stacey Hodulich and husband Marc of Atlanta, GA Jeff Goodfriend and wife Kaye of Knoxville, TN Joshua Chrusciel and wife Heather of Charlotte, NC Great Grandchildren: Blake Chrusciel, Riley Goodfriend, Gabby Goodfriend, Evie Hollis, Anabel Hollis, Chase Hodulich, Dylan Hodulich Cousins: Morty Goodfriend and wife Kathy Janet Avallone and husband Jay Special lady friend, Ruth Steel, who helped make his last years happy and loving with their wonderful relationship. She always brought a smile to his face whenever they were together. Special thanks Dr. Carlos Caballero and his nurse Marsha and their staff for their care and concern. Thanks to the staff of the Sarasota Bay Club, from the front desk to his special home health care aides: Anne, Tina, Errol, Islia, Rocia and Faye for their help and friendship. Special thanks to his long time personal caretaker, Lubov Melnichenko for all her care and attention. Services will be held at Temple Beth El in Knoxville, TN on Wednesday, September 18, at 2:00 p.m. with Rabbi Mathew Michaels and Rabbi Howard Simon officiating. Interment immediately following services at the New Jewish Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-8pm Wednesday night and Thursday night at the home of Robert and Wendy Goodfriend, 400 East Fox Den Dr, Knoxville, TN. Pallbearers will be :Jeff Goodfriend, Josh Chrusciel, Jeff Hollis, Marc Hodulich, Randy Mullins, Bob Whaley, Morty Goodfriend.
