Paul R. Mayer of Parrish, Florida passed away at his home on March 24, 2014. He was 84.
Paul was born on July 22, 1929 to Paul and Julia Mayer in Chambersburg, PA. He graduated from Chambersburg High School, attended Penn State University, Shippensburg University and received his Masters Degree in Social Work from the Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. He worked at all levels of community programs but was most effective with Mental Health and Mental Retardation. He wrote state programs on group homes for the mentally ill.
Paul served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict as staff sergeant in charge of non-commissioned airmen assignments at Air Training Command, Scott Air Force Base, Belleville, Illinois.
Paul was an expert fly fisherman who also enjoyed deep sea fishing on the Outer Banks. He was an associate member of the Penn State Alumni Association Nittany Lion Club, Hershey Historical Society, Suncoast Mummers String Band and the Jacobite Pipe and Drum Band.
He was most proud of his membership in the Sons of the American Revolution with direct ancestry to Christian Ardinger of Williamsport, MD.
Paul is survived by Mary E. Mayer, his wife of 54 years; his son Virgil P. Mayer and daughter-in-law Roslyn of Holmes Beach, Florida; a grandson Douglas Haughaboo and son-in-law James Haughaboo of Henderson, Nevada. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Haughaboo in 2003.
There is no service. Burial is in the family plot in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra, PA. Arrangements by National Cremation Society.
