Richard "Dick" Batten, age 83, died on August 3rd in Sarasota FL after a sustained and courageous battle against lung cancer. He was born and grew up in Indianapolis, IN. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margo, son Tom and his wife Joan of Lancaster NY, their children Beau and Natalie and son John and his wife Paige of Lake Sherwood CA and their children Nicholas and Sarah. He is also survived by his brother Bill and his wife Jean, also of Sarasota FL.
Richard was an Eagle Scout and attended Shortridge High School in Indianapolis IN. He graduated from Purdue University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He interrupted his post graduate education at Butler University to serve in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.
Richard was an active member of the Sahib Chapter of the Shriners where he enjoyed participating in "Knife and Fork" events. He was affectionately known as "Pappy" to his grandchildren and he will be forever remembered for his fierce devotion to his wife and family, unconditional generosity and dedication to his friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, August 10th at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, 40 North Orange Avenue, Sarasota FL. Contributions in his memory can be made to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd Sarasota FL, 34238. Flowers are gratefully declined.
