Turner, Roscoe Charles
Nov. 25, 1939 - Dec. 9, 2013
Roscoe Charles Turner, 74, the son of Roscoe W. and Amelia Turner, passed from this life on Monday, December 9, 2013, with family members at his side. Roscoe suffered a massive stroke in December 2012 that left him paralyzed on one side and unable to speak. Up to the time of his stroke, he lived life to the full. He served his country honorably and retired from the U.S. Army Special Forces Reserves. He traveled extensively, both across this country and internationally, often to skydive with the locals. He "retired" from his many years of computer processing work, when he last spent several years as a contract employee for the U.S. State Department who traveled to many of our embassies overseas to solve their computer problems and teaching staff how best to utilize the computer capabilities. Roscoe never slowed down. In addition to his care and concern for his own family, he invested his later years in providing educational opportunities for the tribal children of Thailand. Through personal connections and his involvement with Rotary, he coordinated work efforts and financing to build and improve schools and libraries to provide opportunities for children who had so little. For this work, he was recognized in 2012 as Rotarian of the Year for his local club and other Rotarian awards, but his primary recognition came from the smiles on the faces of the Hill Tribe children of northern Thailand, their teachers, and other countrymen.
Roscoe is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Janice Campbell Turner; son Terry Turner; son Ted Turner and his wife Karen; daughter Toni Turner Budd and her husband Ted; Jan's son, Matthew Campbell and his wife Audra, and daughter, Caren Campbell Lewis and her husband Gerard; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Eileen Jones, and a brother Alfred Turner and his wife Beryl. He was preceded in death by his mother and father. We mourn but not as those who have no hope.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life gathering on Sunday, January 12th, 2014, from 3:30 to 5:30 pm at the Pelican Pointe Clubhouse, 499 Derbyshire Drive, Venice.
