March 24, 1935 - June 30, 2014

Walter G. Wilmshurst, 79 formerly of Massena passed away Monday morning (June 30, 2014) at his Florida residence in Englewood. Family and friends are invited to call Monday (July 7, 2014) from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena. Funeral services will be held Tuesday 10:00 A.M. at the Phillips Memorial Home with Rev. Judith VanKennen officiating, with burial to follow in Ingham Cemetery, Morristown, NY. Walt is survived by his wife Kathleen, his sons Walt and Kirk and wife Amy both of Massena, his grandchildren, Walter Mackenzie, Emily, Wyatt, Margaret and Zane. Walt also leaves behind his sisters, Charlotte Oates of Crystal River, FL; and Catherine Crosier of Pittsford, NY; nieces and nephews. Walt is also remembered by his stepchildren; Julie Regan of Lynchburg, VA; Dr. William Smith, Lake Placid, NY; Richard Smith, Fairfield, CT; Thomas Smith, Newburyport, MA; and Robert Smith of Marshfield, MA.

He was employed at the Massena Banking and Trust Co. in Massena later acquired by the National Bank of Northern New York through merger. In 1978 Walt was named President of the Massena Savings and Loan Association retiring in 2000. He served as Secretary and Director on the Board. He married Eunice Kinney February 18, 1962 at the Advent Christian Church in Massena. Eunice predeceased Walt on December 15, 2003. For many years the family spent their summers at the cottage on Blackstone Bay, Morristown. Walt later married Kathleen Smith on March 23, 2005 at St. Raphael Church in Englewood, FL. He was a member of the Massena Rotary Club, past President, former President of the St. Lawrence County Bankers Association, former Board member of the St. Lawrence County United Fund, former Director of the Henry P. Clark Foundation, former board member of the Massena Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, and he also was very active in raising funds for the Massena Rotary Club, Massena Arena project.
