Webb Halbert, 88, of Sarasota died peacefully with his sons by his side on July 22, 2014. He moved to Sarasota from Chicago, Ill. in 1962.
He graduated from Iowa State University in 1951, and was an All-American Running Back for the Cyclones. He was drafted by the Chicago (Arizona) Cardinals and the Chicago Bears in 1950. He served in the US Navy during WWII.
He taught physical education in Sarasota County at McIntosh Junior High/Middle School from 1962 until his retirement in 1991. During those years he also taught Driver's Education in the summer months at Riverview High School. He dedicated his life to coaching and following his grandchildren's athletic pursuits. He also served as the head football coach and track coach at McIntosh, and was the school's Athletic Director for over 20 years. When football was eliminated at the county's junior high schools Webb became a member of the football coaching staff at Sarasota High School, where he continued his coaching for many years after retirement.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Iowa State Alumni Association.
He was preceded in death by his wife Sandra of 54 years, and his grandson Henry Russell. He is survived by his sons, Gary R. Halbert (wife Pamela), and Randall C. Halbert (wife Renée), all of Sarasota; his grandchildren, Holli Miller, Colleen Ray, Clay Halbert, Gary Halbert, Jason Halbert, Nicole Halbert, Kaylyn Chupp, and Elizabeth Powell; and 9 great grandchildren.
A visitation and Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 2 - 3 pm with a service to follow at National Cremation and Burial Society, 2990 Bee Ridge Rd, Sarasota, FL 34239.
