Bill was a native of Jacksonville, Florida and a graduate of Landon High School, class of 1946. He was a talented athlete and loved nature and the outdoors. Bill served in the American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Corps as a teenager. Upon graduating from high school, he was offered a professional baseball contract, but chose a football scholarship at the University of Georgia instead. He also attended the University of Florida and later met his wife, Davey at Jacksonville University in 1950. They were married in 1954.
Bill worked at Jacksonville Shipyards for 38 years and retired as Paymaster in 1993. He was active in his church and community and was well-known for his sense of humor and outgoing personality. He coached numerous baseball teams over the years. He retired to Sarasota in 1997 where he worked as a bridge tender on Longboat Key until 2012.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Davey; three children, Glen and wife Shelly, Gnann and husband Jim, Marie and husband Ron; six grandchildren, Carl, Culver, Annemarie, Susannah, Caroline, and Naomi Joy; and one great-grandchild, Conor.
