A. (Al) Charles Pierce hiked his last mile and climbed his highest mountain on December 25, 2013 to be with Marian, his wife and the love of his life.|
A New Englander, Yankee born, he was raised and educated in New Hampshire. During WWII he joined the Air Force and attended B-17 training followed by B-29 training in the USA until the end of the war in the Pacific. Charles then returned to the University of New Hampshire and graduated with a B.S. in Geology. He went to work in 1948 with Creole Petroleum (SONJ affiliate -now Exxon) in Venezuela as a Field, Exploration, and Production Geologist. He met his wife, Marian Verette, in Venezuela and they married in 1952. He had subsequent supervisory and management assignments with other SONJ affiliates in Tulsa (JPR Co), Intercol (Colombia), IPC (Peru), Esso Australia, Esso Exxon UK, Esso Exploration Brazil and finally Esso Exploration (Houston) where he retired in 1986.
He was very active after his retirement volunteering at the Natural History Museum in Houston as a docent, the Bible Museum, and held several volunteer positions at University Place Retirement Community in Houston. Charles's love of volunteering was only surpassed by the way he devotedly cared for his wife in her last years.
He is preceded in death by his wife Marian, Parents Amelia and Teofil Pieciewicz, Brothers Charles Pierce and Dr. Michael Pierce. He is survived by son Frank Pierce of Sarasota, Florida, daughter Leslie and husband Dr. Cesar Garza of Round Rock, Texas, and daughter Carla Pierce and Jonathan Caine of Boulder, Colorado. Other survivors include Suzie Beauchamp and grandchildren Rev. Charlie Garza, John Garza, Christina Garza and Ian Pierce.
The family would like to express thanks to the staff at The Court of Round Rock. The family is particularly grateful to the staff at University Village in Round Rock who cared for him in his last days and provided such a safe and loving environment.
