Charles Barrett Monday, II, age 74, of Houston, died Tuesday, the 7th of January 2014, surrounded by his loving family.|
Barrett, the son of Charles Miller Monday and Mary Monday Nason, was born in Port Arthur, Texas on the 6th of April 1939. His family moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana where he began school. In 1949, the family relocated to Houston, where he graduated from Spring Branch High School in 1957. Following graduation, he attended and was graduated from Texas A& M University, class of 1961. While at Texas A&M, he was a member of the Corps of Cadets, with the rank of Colonel, and upon graduation was a Lt. JG. in the United States Navy. Barrett served in the Vietnam War as a Naval Navigator on P-3 Orions. Upon completion of active duty, he remained in the Naval Reserve and served for 22 years, retiring as Captain in 1983. While stationed in California, Barrett met and married his beloved wife, Carole Fuller Monday.
They moved to Houston 1966 where he began his career in the brokerage business. During his career, he received many awards and honors including serving on the Chairman's Advisory Council of the American Funds Group. Barrett was active in his community and served as mayor of Piney Point Village for many years. He was an avid and very proud alumnus of Texas A & M University and enjoyed his association with the 12th Man Foundation, as well as promoting the university to prospective students. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, the nation's oldest patriotic organization, founded in 1783 by officers of the Continental Army. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Barrett's church and his family were of special importance to him. He was a devoted member of the choir at Christ Church Cathedral, and later at St. Martin's Episcopal Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. Never having met a stranger, Barrett's caring and gracious spirit was felt by all around him. His optimism, kindness, and loyalty to those with whom he came in contact, will be missed. He will especially be remembered for his welcoming smile.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Carole; his daughter, Jennifer M. Leman and husband, Thomas Christian Leman, and their children, Mary Barrett and Thomas; his daughter, Emily M McGaughy and husband, Richard Kent McGaughy, Jr., and their children, Esme and Mary Frances; and his son, Charles Barrett Monday III.
The memorial service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 10th of January, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, where the Rev. Thomas S. Hotchkiss, Vice Rector, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Bagby Parish Hall.
