Dorothy Helen |
Shepherd Davison, matriarch of a boisterous Galveston family, passed away Thursday morning, August 7, 2014, after a brief illness. She leaves behind seven children she nurtured into their 50s and 60s, generations of other adoring family members and nearly 88 years' worth of warm relationships, including her tightknit group of "kindergarten friends." She loved the people in her life and enjoyed celebrating their successes.
Dorothy was born in Galveston on September 29, 1926, and except for the time she spent earning a BBA from the University of Texas at Austin and a few months stranded away from home by Hurricane Ike she never spent more than a few nights off the island. She graduated from Ursuline Academy, married at St. Patrick Catholic Church, raised a family on 25th Street and bore the loss of two husbands. The city was another cherished love. "I can't imagine raising my family anywhere else," she once told a newspaperman.
For three decades, Dorothy also loved her home on Lake Madeline. It was a regular stop on multiple bridge and mahjong circuits and it is hard to imagine a Thanksgiving or Easter holiday without Dorothy there, at the center of a huge and noisy celebration.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Frank J. Shepherd Jr. in 1976, by her second husband, Victor R. Davison Sr., in 2005 and her son-in-law Mark Daly in 2012. She is survived by her children Margaret Ann and Steve Mallia, F. John Shepherd III, Joan Daly, Diane and Ira Shapiro, Dorothy and Mike Kaldis, Richard and Cynthia Shepherd and Patricia Shepherd and Ronnie Crocker; grandchildren David and Leslie Mallia, Adam Mallia, Allison Daly, John and Laurie Daly, Ellen and Steven Dennis, Amy and Daniel Ferber, Leah Shapiro, Ashley Shapiro, Blaine Shapiro, Megan Kaldis, Gregory Kaldis, Nick Kaldis, Frank Shepherd and James Shepherd; great-grandchildren Anna, Sam, Eli and Sadie Ferber and Clare, Jessa, Mark and Mikayla Daly; brother F. Joseph Pequigney and brother-in-law Steven Mays; sister Margie Cashion; sister-in-law Pat DeMary; Vic Davison's children and their families and scores of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends
