a second generation Houstonian, passed away on February 28, 2013. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mamie and Simon Minchen; her daughter, Sandi Schaffer; her brother, Ralph Minchen; and her cousin, Elaine Minchen, wife of David Minchen.
She attended Houston's Poe Elementary, Lanier Junior High School, and Lamar High School. She also attended the University of Texas and the University of Houston.
She was a fulltime mother, raising her four children. After they became independent, she became involved in many civic and charitable activities. For over 30 years, she was the Chairman of the Maury Minchen Health and Hunger Fund at Congregation Beth Israel; a board member, and Past-President of the Baylor Women's Faculty Club; Founder of the Baylor 10 (a support group for the Baylor College of Medicine); served on the Host Committee for the King and Queen of Sweden (New Sweden 88); Co-Chaired the B'nai Brith British American Tradition Awards Dinners in 1987 and 1988; and served as a participant in the trade missions to the German State of Rhineland Pfalz. In 1988 she was named as an Honorary Ambassador to Rhineland Pfalz, Germany.
She was involved in countless other activities but later returned to her favorite, being a mother to her precious son Jordan Tyler Minchen. She is also survived by her brother, Meyer Minchen, and her children; Randy and Molly Schaffer, Don and Barbie Schaffer, Kent Schaffer, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
At Dorothy's request, no funeral service will be held. The family will hold a private memorial service.
She will be entombed in the Beth Israel Mausoleum on West Dallas, in Houston, Texas, next to her daughter and parents.
