Elisabeth Easton Obituary
Elisabeth "Ziggy" Szilagyi Easton died peacefully on December 30, 2012. She had suffered with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for several years.
Ziggy was born at Schofield Barracks, Honolulu, Hawaii on June 25, 1934, to Ragnhild Dalsgaard Szilagyi and Colonel Nicholas Szilagyi. As an army brat, her family moved around quite a bit, ending up in San Antonio. For 13 summers, she attended Camp Arrowhead in Hunt, Texas - a proud Kickapoo.
She graduated from Alamo Heights High School and proceeded to The University of Texas where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. It was in San Antonio where Ziggy met Robert L. Easton. They dated at The University, married in San Antonio, moved to Houston, and had their first child. They then moved to Tulsa where they had three more children. In 1964, they returned to Houston and called it home.
Ziggy was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Houston and the River Oaks Garden Club. She was a member of St. John the Divine Church and most enjoyed the early Sunday service in the Chapel. She volunteered at the Guild Shop for 30 years.
She and Bobby loved to travel, often meeting up with their friends or joining them on cruises. Some of her favorite places were the pastures of South Texas and the bays and beaches of Galveston, Port O'Connor, Rockport, and Port Aransas. She loved to look for sharks' teeth and watch pelicans. She treasured her collection of Bing & Grondahl plates, as well as every Sailor's Valentine that Bobby gave her.
She was a voracious reader and loved games. Ziggy would dispatch the New York Times crossword puzzle each morning and would often have a jigsaw puzzle going. She loved to needlepoint, and her pillows, belts, rugs, tapestries, and Christmas stockings are still much sought after. She loved to play bridge and mahjong with friends.
Ziggy is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert Lewis Easton, and their children: Robert Lewis Easton, Jr. and wife Lyla, Bennett Nicholas Easton, Elizabeth Ragnhild Easton and partner Casey Wilson, Laura Armstrong Easton, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and her dear sister Marie Szilagyi Campbell, her children, and grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at two o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 4th of January, at St. John the Divine Church, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, with The Rev. Dr. Douglas W. Richnow officiating. A reception will be held immediately afterward in Sumners Hall.
Ziggy wishes to acknowledge the excellent care she received at The Methodist Hospital, specifically by the Staff on Jones 9th Floor, as well as Drs. Carl Dahlberg and Suzanne Lasek. Her family wishes to acknowledge the compassion, care and comfort provided by the staff at Houston Hospice. In lieu of flowers, Ziggy requested that a gift be made to a .
