Frederick Paris
Coogan, Jr.
died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, the 5th of June 2014. He was 84 years old.
Fred was born in New Orleans on the 28th of June 1929 to Agnes Hazel Brunet and Frederick Paris Coogan. During his childhood, he lived in New Orleans, LA, Memphis, TN, and Mobile, AL. He graduated from Jesuit High School in New Orleans, LA in 1946. He attended Rice University and graduated from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL in 1950.
During the Korean War, Fred served in the U.S. Army as a member of the Counter Intelligence Corps. After his discharge, he entered the Jesuit Novitiate in Grand Coteau, LA. Upon the completion of 16 months of training, he decided that he did not have the calling to be a priest and entered the business world. He worked for National Cash Register and Ruth Berry Pump Co. Later, Fred became a distributor for Ruth Berry and was President of Perma Pumps & Supply Co. serving East Texas. Fred served as a director for Ruth Berry Co. and Thrifty Rental Car. After retiring from the industrial pump business in 1980, Fred became a Member of the Appraisal Institute and worked as both a real estate appraiser and investor.
Fred was a loving and devoted husband to Norma whom he met 56 years ago on a blind date and a devoted father to their three children. For over 30 years, Fred enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at their home in Lakeway. He had great fun being on the hill with his weed-eater, swimming in the lake, or just discussing world events with friends.
His parents, sister-in-law, Evelyn Sorsby Callahan and his brothers-in-law: Harlan Winn, Richard Bannerot, and Robert Callahan preceded him in death.
Fred is survived by his wife Norma Jean Callahan and his three children: Fred Coogan III and wife, Sabine Bildstein of Boulder, CO; Cathleen Coogan, Sheila Coogan and beloved granddaughter, Katie Coogan-all of Houston. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Winn-Bannerot and nephews: Harbour Winn and wife, Mickey of Oklahoma City, OK; Paris Winn and partner Beau Baumgartner of Natchez, MS; Ashley Winn and wife, Rev. Jane Grady of LaSelva Beach, CA; Ronnie Callahan and wife, Frances of Pearland, TX and nieces: Joni Bergeron and husband, Gerald of Lake Jackson, TX and Carolyn Robinson and husband, Michael, of Houston, TX.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, the 14th of June at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Rd., Houston, TX 77056 at ten o'clock in the morning with a reception following at the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory to the Jesuit Seminary Fund, 710 Baronne Street, Suite B, New Orleans, La. 70113-1064 or the .
