Harry Toulmin
Bowers III, 70 of Alvin, Texas passed away on Wed. Jan. 9, 2013. He was born in Lufkin, Texas on Nov. 30, 1942.
He is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Janette Bowers of Alvin,TX., son Harry Toulmin Bowers IV and wife Katherine, grandchildren Harry T. Bowers V and Elizabeth Bowers all of New Braunfels, TX. and sisters Clairine of West Hollywood, Ca. and Robbie Alexnder of San Marcos, CA.
Harry spent much of his childhood in the Jones Creek and Freeport areas where at a young age he grew fond of the outdoors and specifically fishing, which became a lifelong passion. He graduated from lufkin High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force he began working in the trucking and freight industry in Southern California. He quickly progressed through the labor ranks and became the youngest president of a Local Teamster Union. Harry had a passion and gift for negotiating labor contracts, representing workers in grievances and spear heading organizing drives. Much of his career dealt with propelling blue collar workers to enter the middle class. With the exception of one break in service Harry worked for the Teamsters Union in Southern California and Texas for most of his professional life as a business agent and organizer. He negotiated fair contracts with employers, protected workers and their families and brought a corrupt labor union boss to justice. He truly felt it was a privilage and honor to represent the rank and file.
A celebration of Harry's life will be held on Feb. 16th. By his request, Harry's ashes will be spread in Galveston Bay, one of his favorite areas to fish. Friends are welcome to join the family at Williams Boat Rentals (pier 19), Galveston, Tx. at 9:45 A.M. At noon family and friends are invited to continue a celebration of Harry's life at the Fisherman's Wharf Seafood Grill, Galveston TX. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to either the or the American Kidney Association.
