Hugh Edward Johnson , 78, passed away November 3, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born in Houston, Texas on February 20, 1934, moved to San Antonio in 1949. He and his wife Barbara moved back to Houston in late 2011 to be close to their daughter and her family. He was a graduate of Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio and The University of Texas at Austin. After receiving his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering he worked for H. B. Zachry Company and its subsequent companies for 35 years in various construction and management positions and, for a brief time, owned his own construction company. He married Barbara Anne Leonard in1967 and they enjoyed 45 years together. He was a loving, caring individual with the highest integrity and ideals and was respected by many in the construction industry. In 1984 he was one of 10 national honorees recognized for their construction accomplishments the previous year. A dinner in New York hosted by Engineering News-Record magazine commemorated the occasion. Besides construction, his interests included hunting, fishing, golfing, playing poker and bridge. In later years, he and Barbara enjoyed many driving trips throughout the United States, especially to the mountains of the Western U.S. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Hauen and Doris Rigsby Johnson. Besides his wife, Barbara, he is survived by daughter and son-in-law Elaine and Jim Mahr, and granddaughter, Shelley Anne Mahr - all of Houston; brother, Kenneth R. Johnson of Houston; sister-in-law, Beverly Leonard Rosentreter of San Antonio; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 8, at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 14301 Stuebner-Airline Rd., Houston, Texas 77069, The Rev. Robert P. Price officiating.
